How to make finger paint

How to make finger paint

What you will need:

Spoon & fork

4 cups of water in small pot

½ cup of cold water in separate container

4 tablespoons of cornstarch

Kool aid or food coloring

1 teaspoon of salt

1 teaspoon of sugar (optional)

Re-sealable containers for your paint

(you can recycle baby food jars)

Brush and paper (to test your colors)

As a mother of two I am always concerned for my kids safety but always looking for ways to entertain my kids and have fun. My daughter is at that age where she is learning her colors and wants to paint on everything. No paint is mess free and you can find the average finger painting set for under $10. I am a bargain hunter so spending $10 on finger paint is not an option. This is the recipe that I have come up with after a few hours of online research and a few test samples. Everything you need to make your paints are everyday items that you can find in your pantry. Here are the Step by step instructions: Pease follow precisely because if not, it will result in clumpy paint.

·         Place your 4 cups of water on the stove and turn the heat on at  high

·         Add the salt and (optional)sugar and mix

·         While the water is heating up, with a fork mix the ½ cup of cold water with the 4 tablespoons of cornstarch. (Add cornstarch to water)

·         Once the 4 cups of water come to a boil, turn the heat down to medium-Low

·         While mixing with a spoon slowly add the cornstarch/water mix to the pot until the mix is a little less thick then what you want it to be.(It is still hot so it will cool down and become thicker)

·         Quickly remove the pot from the stove and turn it off.

·          Pour desired amount into containers (depends on how many colors you want)

·         Place your pot in the sink and fill with cold water(easier cleanup)

·         Get the colors you desire and slowly add and mix until you reach your desired color. (you can have a brush and paper ready to test your colors)

I prefer using Kool Aid for the paint because it is scented and the colors are more vibrant. The Kool Aid does make the paint stain a bit so I recommend it for painting with brushes.

If you are finger painting I recommend the food coloring but keep in mind, the more you add, the higher chance it will stain little fingers and clothing.

I hope you and your little ones enjoy making projects with this homemade cost efficient paint and remember, No paint is mess free.
